Dental Veneers Are Not Meant to Last Forever

Dental Veneers Are Not Meant to Last Forever Posted on 5/23/2018 by Sundberg Office Dental veneers are a good solution for many cosmetic problems and are made of strong, durable materials that will last you, in many cases, up to 20 years. Depending on your age, however, dental veneers are not meant to last forever.

What Are Veneers Made Of?

Dental veneers are thin shells made of porcelain or resin composite materials, that get bonded to your teeth and can be made to match the rest of your teeth's color and shape.

How Are Veneers Put In?

Porcelain veneers are placed by bonding the veneer to the tooth after shaving off some enamel. Porcelain veneers need to be sent to a lab, so you will get temporary ones until the permanent are ready. The composite resin veneers are attached using a special light to harden the composite and usually require only one visit.

Which Kind of Veneers is Best?

Porcelain veneers last longer, because they are more durable, can be matched to your teeth's color, and repel stains. Porcelain veneers cannot be fixed if a crack or chip occurs and need to be replaced. Composite resin veneers are similar but can be less costly than the porcelain kind and need fewer follow-up visits. They can also be fixed easily if damaged, even though they're not as durable as the porcelain kind. If you get a dental veneer and you want to make it last at least 10-years, you need to take care of it as if they were your natural teeth. Since the shell is placed over the tooth or teeth, you still need to brush twice daily or after each meal, floss regularly and keep your bi-annual checkups. Dental veneers are not meant to last forever, but they can last for many, many years if you care for them properly.
