Important Facts About Having Bad Breath

Important Facts About Having Bad Breath Posted on 7/10/2018 by Sundberg Office Bad breath is one of the most common oral health concerns for patients. It is certainly possible that bad breath can be caused by some foods that you eat for example, garlic or onions, which can leave offensive odors in your mouth, however, if you have a healthy mouth and good oral hygiene habits, these odors should go away after you brush your teeth, and the food has passed through your system. Chronic bad breath can be a sign of more serious problems such as periodontal disease. Here are some important facts about having bad breath.

What Causes Bad Breath?

Bad breath that doesn't go away or returns shortly after brushing can be caused by periodontal disease, where the build-up of plaque on the teeth irritates the gums. Dry mouth is another common cause of bad breath, because of the reduction in saliva production that neutralizes the acids produced by plaque and rids the mouth of dead cells on the tongue, gums, and cheeks. Poor dental hygiene can also cause bad breath, which could also be a sign of other diseases. In addition, there are other issues that cause bad breath, including dental appliances that don't fit properly, dental cavities, and yeast infections of the mouth.

How Do I Get Rid of Bad Breath?

Practicing good oral hygiene at home and keeping your regular dental checkups should help keep your mouth healthy and bad breath. If you have gum disease that is untreated, the longer it goes on, the worse the bad breath will be.
