What Activities Can Restore Your Enamel?

What Activities Can Restore Your Enamel? Posted on 8/20/2016 by Sundberg Office The enamel on your teeth is a protective barrier. It keeps your teeth safe from decay and sensitivity. Every day, your enamel is subjected to many dangers that threaten to ruin it. Once enamel is lost, it cannot be replaced. It can be restored, however, and there are several ways in which this can be done.

What Damages Enamel?

There are many causes of enamel loss. Acidic foods and drinks eat away at it. Sugary substances provide food for bacteria that can cause tooth decay. Dry mouth, a side effect of certain medications, creates an environment conducive to bacterial growth. Grinding, also known as bruxism, can wear your enamel down, exposing dentin, leading to sensitivity.

Using Fluoride

Fluoride is an element that strengthens enamel, helping to protect against decay. It is found in certain foods and also added to the water supply to many homes. You can use fluoridated toothpastes and mouthwashes at home and talk to your dentist about receiving fluoride treatments, a topical application that absorbs into your teeth. Eating Right There are many foods that help keep your body healthy but also contribute to the strength of your enamel. Dairy products – milk, yogurt and cheese – provide calcium. Meat, fatty fish and tofu provide phosphorous. Both of these elements are crucial to strong teeth. Dark leafy greens contain a variety of vitamins and minerals to also aid in enamel strengthening.

Restorative Options

When enamel has suffered a significant amount of damage, restorative options can keep your remaining enamel strong, protecting your teeth. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may consider fillings, veneers or crowns. Your dentist can assess the extent of the damage.

Preventative Measures

Preventing loss can help with your efforts to restore your enamel. Visiting your dentist twice a year helps keep your teeth clean and can help detect any issues before they become major problems. Limit, or even avoid, acidic and sugary foods and beverages. Drink plenty of water. And always maintain a proper oral hygiene regimen. Brush at least twice a day, floss and use mouthwash. Enamel is critical to ensuring that your teeth stay healthy. While you can’t replace what is already gone, you can take measures to restore its strength and prevent any serious oral problems from occurring.
